What to Expect

A day spent birding mainly the higher altitude sites of the Southern Tablelands with an experienced bird guide. Depending on client “wish list” there are a number of sites that can be visited. A tour for someone just out for a good days birding will be different than one for someone with a hit list. To do full justice to the area at least 2 days need to be set aside.

We suggest you bring with you:

  • comfortable covered walking shoes - while there are no major hikes during this tour there will be some walking on potentially rough paths
  • Lightweight long-sleeved shirt and long trousers- some rainforest plants can be rather scratchy
  • Lightweight raingear
  • Jumper or sweatshirt for higher altitudes particularly in winter
  • Hat
  • Sunblock
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera and binoculars

Pick up from accommodation

Pick up from your Cairns or Kuranda accommodation. head inland and south to the southern Tablelands. This tour concentrates on the higher altitude sites and Southern Tablelands Birdwatching Tour #1 concentrates on the mid level sites.

Mt Hypipamee

The area of high altitude rainforest around the decayed volcanic plug at Mt Hypipamee is a great place to look for Golden Bowerbird, Grey-headed Robin, Fernwren, Atherton Scrubwren, Mountain Thornbill, and Bridled Honeyeater. A number of the Tablelands endemics can be seen here and not at the lower altitudes though there is some altitudinal migration with certain species such as Grey-headed Robin coming lower in the winter months.

Quick stop for lunch.

Wondecla & Kaban

The drier forests around Wondecla are good for honeyeaters with several species being found in the trees behind the sports field.

A foray into the higher level dry country around Kaban for Painted Buttonquail, Brown-backed Honeyeater, Brown Treecreeper, Red-browed Pardalote and Crested Shrike-tit can also be made as can a search for Blue-faced Parrotfinch around Topaz.
